KNITTED SKULL CAP

 

SIZES:
Toddler-(18”/45cm), Child-(20”/50cm), Adult-(22”/55cm)

MATERIALS:
Lion Brand Yarn/Superwash Merino Cashmere
1 skein black(mc) & 1 skein white(cc) of worsted weight yarn, each 135yrds/125m.
US 7(4.5mm) 16″ circular needle
US 8(5mm) 16” circular needle
One set of 4 or 5 US 8(5mm) DPNs for when there are too few sts. to hold comfortably on circular needle.
Stitch markers: 5
Tapestry needle for finishing top and weaving in ends.

GAUGE:
5sts./1” on size US 8(5mm) needle.

PATTERN:

With MC & US 7(4.5mm) 16″ circ. needle CO 88, (100, 108)sts.
Making sure your cast on edge is not twisted around needles, place marker and join for working in the round.
K2, P2 rib for 3, (4, 5) rounds.
Change to size US 8(5mm) 16″ circ. needle.
Work in Stockinette St. for 2 rounds; (TODDLER & ADULT SIZES ONLY: increase 2sts. evenly on 1st round). You should now have 90, (100, 110)sts.

BEGIN SKULL PATTERN:
Round 1: *K2(mc), K5(cc), K2(mc), K1(cc)*, rep. from *to* to end of round.

Round 2: *K3(mc), K1(cc), K1(mc), K1(cc), K3(mc), K1(cc)*, rep. from *to* to end.

Round 3: K2(mc), *K1(cc), K1(mc)*, rep. from *to* to end.

Round 4: K1(cc), K1(mc), K5(cc), K2(mc), K1(cc), *K2(mc), K5(cc), K2(mc), K1(cc)*, rep. from *to* to end.

Round 5: *K2(mc), K2(cc), K1(mc), K2(cc), K2(mc), K1(cc)*, rep. from *to* to end.

Round 6: *[K1(mc),K3(cc)]x2, K2(mc)*, rep. from *to* to end.

Round 7: *K2(cc), K1(mc), K3(cc), K1(mc), K2(cc), K1(mc)*, rep. from *to * to end.

Round 8: *[K1(cc), K3(mc)]x2, K1(cc), K1(mc)*, rep. from *to* to end.

Round 9: Repeat round 8.

Round 10: Repeat round 8.

Round 11: *K2(cc), K1(mc), K3(cc), K1(mc), K2(cc), K1(mc)*, rep. from *to* to end.

Round 12: *K1(mc), K7(cc), K2(mc)*, rep. from *to* to end.

Round 13: *K2(mc), K5(cc), K3(mc)*, rep. from *to * to end.

Round 14: *K3(mc), K3(cc), K4(mc)*, rep. from *to* to end.

Continue with (mc) yarn only and working in Stockinette st. work until hat measures 4”, (4”, 5”) from CO edge. On last round:Place stitch markers every 18, (20, 22) stitches.

Decrease round: Knit to 2sts. before marker, K2tog, slip marker. Repeat at each marker to end of round.
Repeat dec. round until 5 sts. total remain.
*When your sts. start to stretch to tight around your circular needle you will need to change to your DPNs or your favorite method of small-tube-knitting.

Cut yarn, leaving an 8” tail. Using your tapestry needle,draw yarn through last 5 sts. and pull to close. Pull tail to inside and weave in your ends.
